Adult Study Class

The Divine Commodity
Begins Sun. September 19th

Paul Twelker will be leading the next adult study class beginning Sunday, September 19, 2010. The ten-week class will be held in Hale O Kukahiko beginning at 8:40 a.m. The following dates have been posted: September 19th & 26th; October 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th & 31st; and November 7th, 14th & 21st.

Paul notes, “This ten-week series explores the concept of ʻConsumer Christianity’ and how consumerism has shaped and distorted elements of our faith and practice. But beyond critiquing the ways that consumerism undermines the core values and practices of the kingdom, we will grapple with what it means to be faithful disciples in a culture that is sold out to consumerism and envision an alternative way of expressing the Christian faith in our culture. Along the way, we will explore spiritual practices that loosens consumerism’s grip and allows us to recapture our identity as the people of God.”

The class will be based on the book, The Divine Commodity, by Skye Jethani. Jethani writes: “A growing number of people are disturbed by the values exhibited by the contemporary church. Worship has become entertainment, the church has become a shopping mall, and God has become a consumable product.”

A brochure and registration form will be available to for those interested in the class on Sundays following the morning worship services. You may also call the church office for a brochure. There is a registration fee of $12.00.
